How to follow up with leads as a plumber

Jul 15, 2026 · 5 min read

You know the drill. A call comes in while you’re under a sink, elbow-deep. You catch it three hours later, call back, and it goes to voicemail. By the time they call you back — if they call you back — they’ve already booked the other guy. Following up isn’t the hard part. Doing it fast, every time, while you’re on a job, is.

The first plumber to reply usually wins

When someone needs a plumber, they’re not shopping around for fun. Something’s broken or leaking on their floor. So they text or call three plumbers and go with whoever answers first. You don’t need a study to believe that — you’ve lost jobs this exact way and you know it.

The window is short. Not “same day.” Minutes. Reply in the first five and you’re in the conversation. Reply an hour later and the job is usually already gone, booked with whoever picked up.

Why hustling harder doesn’t fix it

The advice is always “just follow up faster.” But you can’t. You’re on a job. Your hands are wet. You can’t stop a repair to text a lead back, and you shouldn’t have to. Hustle has a ceiling: you’re one person, and the leads come in exactly when you’re busiest.

Hiring someone to answer is an option, but a full-time office person to catch texts is a lot of money for a two-truck shop. And a generic answering service reads a script — they don’t know your pricing, your schedule, or that you don’t do septic.

What actually works

The goal is a real reply in the first few minutes — enough to say “yes we can help, what’s the address?” and start booking — without you touching your phone. A few things make that happen:

  • Answer instantly, even when you can’t. Whether it’s an auto-text, an answering service, or something that holds a real conversation, the lead needs to hear back before they call the next name on their list. We broke down the options for texting customers back when you’re on a job and the honest tradeoffs of each.
  • Ask a question back. A reply that just says “we’ll call you” doesn’t hold anyone. “What’s the issue and what’s your address?” keeps them talking and gives you what you need to quote.
  • Follow up more than once. Plenty of jobs aren’t won on the first text. A quick nudge the next morning catches the ones who got busy and meant to reply.

Where Oski fits

This is the whole reason Oski exists. When a lead texts or calls, Oski replies in about a minute, asks the right questions, and books the job — with a real person reviewing anything tricky before it sends. You stay on the job; the follow-up still happens. If you’d rather wire up your own auto-texts, that works too — the point is the lead gets an answer before they call the next guy. Here’s what that costs.

The plumber who wins isn’t always the best one. It’s the one who answered. Fix the timing and you stop losing jobs you never should have lost.

Stop losing jobs to slow replies.

Oski answers every lead in about a minute, books the job, and asks for the review after — with a real person watching. You stay on the job.
