How to win back old customers in home service

Jul 1, 2026 · 5 min read

Everybody’s chasing new leads. Meanwhile there’s a list sitting in your phone of people who already hired you, already paid, already know your work is good — and haven’t heard from you in a year. Winning them back is cheaper and easier than finding strangers. Most shops just never do it.

Why old customers drift (it’s not you)

They didn’t leave angry. They forgot. The AC got fixed, life moved on, and when it broke again eighteen months later they Googled “AC repair near me” — because your number wasn’t saved and you weren’t in their head. A satisfied customer and a forgotten one look identical until the day they need you again and pick someone else.

The math nobody runs

You paid — in time or ad spend — to get that customer the first time. Bringing them back costs a text. If you’ve done three hundred jobs, that’s three hundred people who’d probably say yes to the right reminder: a maintenance check, a seasonal service, a “haven’t seen you in a while.” That’s the cheapest pipeline you own, and it’s just sitting there.

How to actually do it

  • Pull your list. Old invoices, your phone, whatever you’ve got. Names and numbers.
  • Segment by what makes sense. Seasonal trades: who’s due? HVAC before summer, gutters before fall, detailing before the holidays. Everyone else: anyone you haven’t touched in six to twelve months.
  • Send a real message, not a blast. “Hey Dave, it’s been about a year since we serviced your furnace — want us to tune it up before winter?” A reason to reach out beats “we miss you.”
  • Give them one easy action. A reply, a booking link, a number to text back. Don’t make them dig.
  • Don’t overdo it. Two or three touches a year, tops. Win-back is a tap on the shoulder, not a barrage. Spam your old customers and you lose them for good.

The honest tradeoff

This works, but it’s tedious by hand — pulling lists, remembering who’s due, writing personal texts, tracking who replied. It’s the first thing that falls off when you’re busy, which is always. That’s why most shops “mean to” and never do.

This is one of the things Oski runs for you: it keeps your customer list, flags who’s due, and sends personal win-back texts on a schedule you set — dormant customers back on the calendar without you running a campaign. See how it works. And after you win them back, it’s the same system that asks them for a review and follows up next time.

The leads you already paid for are the best ones you’ll ever have. Stop letting them go cold on a list. A couple of texts a year turns “one-time job” into “my guy.”

Stop losing jobs to slow replies.

Oski answers every lead in about a minute, books the job, and asks for the review after — with a real person watching. You stay on the job.
