HVAC contractor license requirements in New Jersey.

New Jersey licenses HVACR at the state level through its own board — the State Board of Examiners of Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors, separate from the plumbing board. The credential is the Master HVACR Contractor license, and there are several accepted routes to qualify.

What New Jersey requires.

Master HVACR Contractor

The state license required to contract heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration work for the public in New Jersey.

Journeyperson (experience step)

Not a standalone state license — a year of journeyperson work under a licensed Master HVACR Contractor is the final experience step on every qualifying path.

Getting the Master HVACR Contractor

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Qualify by one of three routes: a four-year US Department of Labor–approved HVACR apprenticeship; a bachelor’s degree in HVACR or a related field; or a two-year degree plus at least two years of a DOL-approved HVACR apprenticeship
  • Every route then requires one year of journeyperson experience under a licensed Master HVACR Contractor
  • Pass both the Master HVACR Trade exam and the Business and Law exam with at least 70%
  • Carry $500,000 of general liability insurance for combined property damage and bodily injury per occurrence (or approved self-insurance)
  • Post a $3,000 surety bond

Renewal: Every two years, with 5 hours of continuing education each renewal period after the first.

  • · HVACR is licensed by a different New Jersey board than plumbing — if you do both trades, you deal with both boards.

The license gets you the work — answering gets you the job

Peak-season call volume buries you; off-season, the pipeline goes silent.

Maintenance-plan renewals slip because nobody texts the reminder.

Estimates sit unanswered while the homeowner collects two more bids.

Oski answers after-hours emergency texts, chases every open estimate, and nudges last year’s customers before the season turns.
